For decades, the United States has lead the way when it comes to Halloween, with it being one of the biggest holidays of the year! On the other hand, some might say us Brits are a little more cynical during the freaky festivities of October 31.

Unlike our American counterparts, when it comes to embracing halloween and its spooky traditions, we’re somewhat reserved. As a nation we’re completely divided; some go all out decorating their homes, stocking up on tempting treats and creating costumes, while others can’t stand the imported traditions.

To help us find out if Britain really is anti-Halloween, we surveyed two thousand people and asked, ‘will you be opening the door to trick-or-treaters this Halloween?’. Check out our latest infographic to see the results, along with some other interesting stats we picked up along the way!

Dare To Open The Door

Summary

  • Only 3 in 10 adults in the UK open the door to trick-or-treaters on Halloween
  • Over half of the nation will hide from trick-or-treaters on October 31, with a quarter even switching off the lights to avoid them
  • Elderly people over the age of 65+ are less likely to answer the door than any other age group
  • On the other hand, younger people aged 18 – 44 are most happy to open up and dish out treats
  • 7 in 10 answer the door in Northern Ireland, making them the most welcoming in the UK to trick-or-treaters
  • This could be linked to an ancient Irish Halloween tradition, when the poor would go door-to-door of rich people homes, asking for food or money to help them celebrate the frightening festivities
  • Surprisingly 10 percent of parents will let children under 5 go out trick-or-treating unsupervised
  • A whopping 83 percent of mums and dads admit that they have lied to their children so they don’t have to go out trick-or-treating
  • 10 percent spend over £50 on Halloween goodies and supplies during the month October
